Rescue

A volunteer accidentally saved a mother polar bear from danger

An Unexpected Assignment Starts

For a group of Arctic wildlife volunteers stationed close to a desolate arctic beach, it was meant to be simply another daily grind.  The vast terrain opened out eternally in solitude, wind, and snow only.

One teenage team member, Alex, had gone alone to check an abandoned weather station as a volunteer.  He had no idea, but fate had far more significant ideas for him.

A Viewpoint of Stress

Alex saw movement far in the distance, something odd while travelling across the ice.  He saw a big polar bear lying close to a ridge through his binoculars.  But something did not seem correct.

This one was not moving at all, unlike other polar bears, who naturally flee from people.  She appeared frail, maybe even damaged.

A Dangerous Method

Alex knew the risks of approaching a polar bear, particularly a mother, but his instincts told him she required assistance.  Equipped with just a radio and a tranquillizer dart (for an emergency), he moved carefully in front of us.

The whole scene emerged as he got closer: half-buried in the snow, the mother bear’s paw was firmly hooked in a rusty steel trap.  Blood had darkened the fur around the incision.  Once wild and wary, her eyes now gleamed with weariness and suffering.

The Undiscovered Cubs

Alex froze suddenly at a sound.  Two small cubs poked out from behind a snow mound close by.  Silent observers were shaking from cold and terror.

The problem was more pressing than he had realized.  The mother lost all ability to hunt or defend her cubs.  Time was running short; I called for backup.

Alex rapidly radioed his squad.  Urgent mobilization of the rescue team brought tools, medical supplies, and tranquillizers.

Alex sat at a safe distance—not too close to inciting—but close enough to monitor as she waited.  The mother bear stared directly at him, never turning away.  There was, however, a brittle trust.

An Accurate Operation

The mother bear was safely sedated when the team arrived.  Working quickly and deliberately, volunteers released her paw from the terrible trap.  Though not beyond mending, the damage was profound.

They banded the damage, gave antibiotics, and covered the incision.  Though obviously underfed and terrified, the cubs were confirmed to be uninjured under gentle examination.

An Appreciative Farewell

The tranquillizer wore off after many hours of labour.  Confused at first, the mother bear shook and then stood slowly.  She turned to view the people one more last time.

In that still moment, something went between them—not fear but understanding.

She gave her pups a gentle prod, and they both headed across the ice.

A lifetime permanently altered.

Knowing his actions had changed things, Alex stood as they vanished into the distance.  Though in following his instinct and compassion, he had turned three lives around, he hadn’t set out to be a hero.

The narrative of the unintentional rescue permeated the neighbourhood and beyond, motivating others to behave compassionately even in the most unanticipated events.
